A Short Kia History

Did you know that Kia didn’t actually begin in the automotive industry? Kia initially manufactured bicycle parts and steel pipes by hand.

  • Once the company garnered success in the steel industry, they began producing whole bicycles in 1951.
  • In 1952, the company adopted the name “Kia.” Kia then began manufacturing motorcycles.
  • Kia began making commercial vehicles by 1962.
  • In 1992, Kia dealerships began cropping up in the United States.
  • By 1995, America boasted 30 Kia dealerships across the country.

Kia has enjoyed exponential growth in the U.S. since 1995, producing those popular vehicles you know them for, such as the Sportage and the Soul. The rest, as they say, is history!

Where is Kia Made?

Since 1994, when Kia debuted their vehicles in North America, Kia has been expanding through the European and North American markets. Today, along with its Seoul headquarters, Kia also boasts assembly plants in Zilina, Slovakia and West Point, Georgia.
